Retail Store Manager
Location: 66 Main Street, Middlebury, VT
Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, 40 hours/week
Compensation: $55,000–$60,000 base + monthly sales bonus
About Middleton
Middleton is a locally owned women's clothing and accessories boutique in downtown Middlebury, built around effortless style, personalized service, and a genuinely welcoming shopping experience. We're growing our business, and this role is a key part of that growth.
We're looking for a sales-driven, experienced retail leader to run our Middlebury store day-to-day and help build the systems and team that will support where we're headed next. If you love the thrill of hitting a sales goal, coaching a team to sell better, and owning a P&L-level view of a store's success, this is your role.
What You'll Do
Drive sales, first and foremost:
- Own the store's monthly sales targets and build the team's daily habits around hitting them.
- Sell directly — model strong selling and styling on the floor, especially during peak hours.
- Track performance against goals and adjust tactics (promotions, outreach, styling appointments) to close gaps.
Lead the team:
- Recruit, train, and coach team members on selling technique, product knowledge, and customer experience.
- Build a positive, high-performing, accountable team culture.
Run the store:
- Oversee scheduling, opening/closing, and cash handling.
- Maintain inventory, merchandising, and the overall look and feel of the store.
- Support promotions, events, social media, and local community partnerships.
- Work closely with the owner on initiatives that support the business's growth.
What We're Looking For
- A proven track record of meeting or exceeding retail sales goals — this is the single most important qualification for this role.
- 2+ years of retail management or supervisory experience (boutique or specialty retail a plus).
- Comfort setting sales targets and holding a team accountable to them, not just "being comfortable working toward goals."
- Strong communication and leadership skills — people want to work hard for you.
- A genuine interest in styling, fashion, and visual merchandising.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, solve problems, and jump in wherever needed.
